Elementary Odd-One-Out Irrelevant Sentence Exercise 1

Find the odd sentence that is irrelevant to the paragraph.

1. Our family has a pet dog, Rover. He is a very smart dog. (I) He does many things to let us know how he feels. (II) He is happy if his tail is standing and swaying from left to right. And he is sad or sick if his tail is down on the floor. (III) The floor is so cold and dirty that’s why he doesn’t want to sleep there. (IV) His eyes are big and his ears and tail stand up if he wanted to play. If he wanted to sleep, he just opens his mouth so big while lying on a rug.

 
 
 
 

2. A lion dance is made in China during Chinese New Year to bring good luck.  (I) Five or more dancers do the lion dance. (II) One wears the head, one the body and the other three play the musical instruments for the dance. (III) Lion colors have meanings: a black lion is a fighting lion, a red lion is full of happiness and success and a multicolored lion is the oldest and the wisest. (IV) People give red envelopes as a sign of good luck.

 
 
 
 

3. It was becoming darker and the stars are coming out one by one. The storm stopped for a while, but not for long. (I) The sky was so clear that I could see the stars twinkling brightly in the night sky. (II) Strong winds started to blow and the waves washed me and my ship on the surface. I thought I was going to die. (III) But I saw a piece of wood so I hold on to it at once. (IV) I was freezing in the water as I waited for anyone to come and help me.

 
 
 
 

4. Daniel Defoe is the writer of the famous story, The Adventure of Robinson Crusoe. It was about a man who lived on an island. (I) Actually, there was a real-life Robinson Crusoe, who worked on a ship. (II) One day, he had a fight with his captain. (III) The captain was so glad about what the sailor did so the captain gave the sailor his ship. (IV) He left the ship and lived on an island. Defoe heard about the adventure of the sailor and used it for his story.

 
 
 
 

5. Camels are often called ships of the desert. (I) They can carry heavy loads for many days without drinking water. (II) Their wide feet don’t sink in the sand. (III) In 1856, America brought camels to the U.S. for desert work. But the Americans didn’t know how to use them. (IV) Americans rode them and made them work in farms. At present American farmers have camels for racing.
