(Pre) Intermediate Level Odd-One-Out Exercise 2

1. With the development of computer technology, there is a new disease to worry about. (I) Computer “virus” is infecting computers in companies, homes, and universities. (II) This virus spreads rapidly, and then disturbs the systems. (III) The virus secretly attaches itself to the body and then can delete or alter files. (IV) The damage is beyond our imagination.

2. We usually think of Indians as primitive people. But they were people with democratic ways. (I) Each Indian tribe had a chief. He was appointed by a group of leaders. (II) The leaders, usually made of older men, often held a meeting to discuss battles, serious problems, yearly feasts and so on. Almost all the problems were tackled at the meeting. (III) The leaders and the chief had a wonderful time trying to know each other. (IV) They made the decisions that the chief was expected to carry out.

3. The societies of thousands of years ago became buried in sand and mud. (I) Some of the places where people once lived were covered by soil because of earthquakes. (II) Others disappeared because of war, fire, flood, or widespread disease. (III) Whatever the reason, cities were left to be found centuries later. (IV) Beneath the surface of each place, there are people living there.

4. Even if you twist and turn so much in your sleep, it is very rare to fall out of bed. (I) The bed is where one sleeps and makes sleeping more confortable. (II) Even when you’re asleep, your brain is still aware of its surroundings. It will remember how big your bed is and how far your body can safely turn. (III) If you should get too close to the edge, it will tell your muscles and you’ll roll backwards. (IV) However, you should be careful because your brain will often lose its direction or position if you’re drunk or you’re in an unfamiliar bed.

5. The rising cost of energy has had many effects on the daily lives of people all over the world. Most people are really trying to conserve oil. (I) As a result, there have been many changes in the lifestyle. For one thing, people are buying smaller cars. (III) Smaller cars look cool and are faster compared to bigger cars. (III) In addition, some people are taking fewer vacations because of high cost of fuel. When they go on vacation, they prefer going to places closer to their hometown. (IV) Finally, people are trying to use less heat in the winter and to use their air conditioner less frequently during the summer.
