A1 Level Odd-One-Out Irrelevant Sentence Exercise 2

1. Nightingale is a bird that is used in many poems. (I) Many poets have tried to talk about its song. (II) This effort goes back to Aristophanes, a poet of early days. (III) To be a poet, one you must love your hometown.  (IV) According to him, the nightingale sings only at night and any in any season. But this isn’t true: nightingales only sing for April to June in England.

2. People build dams for different reasons. (I) Dams help in controlling floods by keeping water. (II) When it rains a lot, dams are opened to let water out and flood a city. (III) Dams near lakes often hold water for the city to use. (IV) When rain doesn’t come, the water dams hold can be let out as needed by the people.

3. There were many beliefs about black cats. (I) Long time ago, people believed that witches can change into black cats. (II) People kept black cats as pets at home. (III) When people saw black cats, they thought they were very bad. (IV) But some people thought cats to bring them good luck. Men working at sea often kept cats on the ship to bring their sailing good luck.

4. Mike, my little son, saw his older sister drawing kisses when she wrote letters to her friends. (I) He loves it when I give him a hug and kisses before he sleeps. (II) After he’d finished drawing a picture, Mike also draws kisses at the foot of the page. (III) I asked him what they were for and he told me they were kisses for me. (IV) Happy, I pointed to my cheek, asking, “Can I have one here, too? Mike thought for a while. “Just a minute,” said the little boy, “I’ll get my pen.”

5. The Hunza people live in the high mountains of northern Pakistan. Most of them live for more than one hundred years old. (I) They seem to be among the healthiest people in the world because they only eat what they plant. (II) Grains, fruits, and vegetables are their everyday food. (III) They sometimes eat butter and eggs. And meat is eaten only on special days.  (IV) They always eat chocolates and candies after dinner.
